Team AQUA GEN – Global STEM Achievement

Team AQUA GEN, comprising Grade 8 students Parvathi Anoop, Vinyas Mummameni, Samarth Sudhakar, Aadya V., Grade Bijo, and Maryam Siddiqui, showcased outstanding innovation through their project, “Genetically Modified Aquatic Plants to Combat Microplastics.” The project proposed the use of genetically engineered duckweed capable of secreting PETase enzymes to break down microplastics in polluted water bodies. Supported by simulations, biocontainment strategies, and projected environmental impact analysis, the project aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.

The team first achieved remarkable success by securing the Gold Award (1st Position) at the GIZMOS STEM MENA Competition 2025, held on 8 November 2025, under the theme “STEM With a Purpose: STEM For Good.” Their solution demonstrated how STEM can address pressing environmental challenges through sustainable innovation.

Building on this achievement, Team AQUA GEN proudly represented the MENA Region at the Gizmos Global STEM Competition 2025–2026 Global Finals. During the Global Virtual Awards Ceremony on 15 May 2026, the team was announced as the Global Champion (1st Place). This prestigious international recognition reflects the students’ scientific inquiry, creativity, collaboration, and commitment to developing impactful solutions for global environmental sustainability, bringing immense pride to the school and the region.
